this morning in midland city, alabama. that's where police have been waiting patiently for five days now. waiting for a suspected gunman to release a 5-year-old boy he's holding in an underground bunker. police say it is this man, and we're starting to hear why he may have killed the bus driver earlier this week. we still don't know why he grabbed the child. joining me now is victor blackwell. temperatures dipped below freezing there overnight. i guess that's probably complicated the situation a bit. >> reporter: yeah. this is the first night it's been this cold. and we've spoken with people who live in this area of southeast alabama. and they tell us that it typically is not this cold this time of year. it dipped below freezing, but we've spoken with sources close to the negotiating process, and they tell us there are indications that this bunker is heated. so that these two people were safe overnight. we've talked a lot about the accused shooter and kidnapper and the victim. but the governor of alabama, robert brently really brought this home this is essentially about a little boy. and

. indra petersons reporting live from boston this morning. now to new york city where wind gusts of 50 miles per hour could cut power to thousands. foot of snow and coastal flooding also predicted. this blizzard on the exact same path as superstorm sandy, that could mean more misery for people still trying to recover from that storm. alison kosik is at columbus circle in manhattan. what is new york doing to prepare? >> reporter: right now we certainly are feeling a nice steady flow of snow coming down and not really sticking except for one or two snowballs we're making on the side here. you look out here, everybody's going to work as usual just like a normal bad weather day. everybody knows what's coming later and that's the tricky point. new york city mayor michael bloomberg is concerned about the cleanup because the storm is expected to really hit around rush hour when everybody's trying to get home, that could make it difficult for those salt spreaders and those plows to get through the streets but also extra trains are coming out for those who live on long island, the lirr is addin

the city of providence, the state of rhode island is trying to deal with this morning. that is massive power outages, wet, thick snow falling on trees, on power lines. it means about nearly 200,000 homes here in rhode island are without power. that is what they're dealing with at this hour. some good news, some of those bridges out to places like newport, rhode island, have reopened. they closed late last night because of these sustained 58-mile-per-hour wind gusts we were getting. those have reopened. i-95, that huge interstate through massachusetts, connecticut, rhode island still closed, though. roads here in providence closed a's well since 5:00 eastern right now. illegal to be out driving on them. stay home. even though it looks better, stay home. we had a chance last night to hang out with this guy, let's bring him into the picture, colonel pete gaynor, who heads emergency transportation. snow plows, gps tracking their every move. you were up all night. give us a sense of the situation now here in providence and broader rohode island. where does it stand? >> it's been a long nigh

that freed that little boy. victor blackwell, live from midland city, alabama this morning. i know you're very excited to be sharing this information, victor. what do we know about the raid and why law enforcement actually decided to go in? >> good morning, zoraida. two reasons primarily. the first is because authorities say they observed jimmy lee dykes with a gun and the second reason is because in the day leading up to that raid, the communications with dykes had broken down. so they realized they could not wait any longer to go in and rescue ethan. ethan is safe. this is a photograph of the 5-year-old being taken into a hospital after nearly a week being held in an underground bunker in alabama. >> he's fine. he's laughing, playing, joking, eating, the things you would expect a normal 5-year-old or 6-year-old young man to do. he's very brave, he's very lucky. the success story is that he is out safe and doing great. >> reporter: the dramatic end came after officers saw 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes holding a weapon. they felt they could not hold off any longer. >> at this point, fbi

% of new york city but had more than half the deaths from hurricane sandy, 23 people died here. there are still an estimated 1400 people who are homeless. i was here three months ago because so many homes were damaged. this right here was a home. and you can see it is rubble and it has stayed rubble. this next door was heavy di damaged however they're rebuilt it. the family that rebuilt was hoping to move in but because of the blizzard they had to stop the work. there was so much concern in staten island because of what happened three months ago, just a couple of blocks away from here. a woman had her two children. her car was blown offer the road and she couldn't hold on to them. they found them later, 2 of the 23 that died and there still is to this day but as a matter of fact across the street you see that tent, people aren't living in that tent. it has been put up to provide hot feels for homeless people. when this started there were people who were homeless from sandy having luncheon side that tent. there's a great sense of relief that the blizzard wasn't as bad as it was

see some of our equipment, as well. this is downtown providence in front of city hall that is actually still complete lly desolate. the power outages, not only in providence, but the entire state, nearly 200,000 homes without power, but 20% of the population of the entire state that has been hit, no power, no heat, major concern. no reading yet from the power company on how long it's going to take to get those power lines back up. what happened here is that wet, thick snow that we had all night because the temperatures are a bit warmer, that weighed on the power lines, trees that fell on power lines and this is the problem. staying off the roads because they need to be cleared so that the power company can get to where they need to address the issue. but overall here in providence, things are looking up, in rhode island, they have opened up some of those big bridges out to newport closed overnight because of that gusting wind. so things are getting progressively better here by the hour. let's go to mary snow, she's in staten island where things are subsided a lot in the past few hours,

's an incomplete pass. so we have these two storms that have to merge right off the coast of new york city. if it happens, we have quite an historic event that's going on. here's where the snow is right now. milwaukee and the like. here's where the rain is. this is the big rainmaker for the southeast. could be inches in places that have quite a bit of rain already. here goes the rain up the east coast. red spots there. that's 6 to 10 inches of rainfall along the northeast along the atlantic coast from bloomington up to parts of delaware. but here's where it gets interesting. when that rain gets up here where the cold air will be, that's where the connection has to happen. that's where the storm is going to spin. that's why there's a blizzard watch already. this is 36 hours before this snow even starts. that's why i'm so wishy washy. i can't say 1 to 12 because that's where the computers are. computers for new york city could be 1 inch with mostly rain. i'm going to show you one that will scare you. boston on this computer, 21 inches of snow. i think that's a pretty good number, especially

on this city in midland city, alabama. victor, good morning to you. have authorities continued to talk with this suspect throughout the night? any progress? >> reporter: good morning, randi. we're waiting for an update that will come at noon eastern today. we know authorities and negotiators were here, overnight, as they have been around the clock since this whole thing started tuesday. we can tell you the big difference from this night than any other in this ordeal, the temperatu temperature. the temperature dipped below freezing for the first time during this ordeal. we know from sources close to the negotiating that this bunker is heated. we also learned more about how this bunker was built from a neighbor of the man accused of shooting a bus driver on tuesday and snatching a kindergartner and taking him into, essentially, this hole in the ground. listen. >> we would always catch him at odd hours of the night running around. it was at random times. it would never be on a schedule at all. he would just do random stuff that humans would not do, a normal person would not do. >> like wh

in the shadows with a secret agenda. here in cairo, in alexandria, the cities along the suez canal and cities in the delta as well, we're seeing large demonstrations. and, of course, in cairo, becoming quite violent, this really does seem to be shaking the foundations of the government of mohamed morsi, who has come out and said that the security forces will act decisively to put down and protect the government institutions, he's blaming the opposition for allowing these demonstrations to happen. but what appears fairly apparent is that he doesn't seem to have much control over what is going on in the streets of cairo and other egyptian cities. >> ben, stand by. jim clancy, my question to you, what has the muslim brotherhood, what has president morsi said so far. you hear ben talking about the people want them out. they elected him. >> well, a majority of them elected him and some of them are very angry and they regret that election. i think what president morsi display done right is to pull his own supporters off the streets, to prevent things from getting any worse. to prevent them from get

sixth day. cnn's martin savidge is in midland city for us. martin, the bus driver is being called a hero. what are people saying about him tonight? >> reporter: well, they are saying every kind of word that means hero when they refer to charles poland. that's exactly what he's being considered by just about everybody in this community because of what he did, the fact he was driving the school bus and according to witnesses stood up and tried to protect the lives of the 20-some children that were on that bus. and then died as a result of it. i should update you a little bit on the standoff itself. not a major change but there was a news conference originally scheduled, it's been cancelled. not uncommon. it simply means authorities haven't got anything really new to say. very little information coming out because these are very sensitive negotiations that are ongoing. the concern is that perhaps the suspect here may have some way to listen to news media. but then you get this very specific information from time to time from authorities, and they mentioned that tonight cheese its, a snack f

, kansas, not nashville, tennessee. in kansas city, they picked up 9.2 inches of snowfall. you can still see it for areas like nebraska, minnesota and into wisconsin. chicago, you've picked up about .81 inches of snowfall. that's welcomed but still not a lot. looking at a wintry mix from this last storm system, bringing some of that through to west virginia, ohio, and down through the south our other story is going to be flooding. we'll talk more about that flooding over the next couple of days. see these numbers up towards areas like in minnesota, three inches of snow. down toward regions like tennessee, even into georgia, we're going to see potentially three to six inches of rainfall. you see a line of storms moving through and this is going to continue to pile up. and this means worry going to be dealing with a flood threat over the next couple of days. there's also a chance for some winter weather to move through parts of the northeast. it looks like some new watches and advisories were just issued. it looks like in some locations we could pick up about six inches of snowfall. some l

in new orleans. it's a situation where everything post 9/11 happens in a major city like superdome you have to start asking questions. there was no terrorism involved. nothing that way. the crowd never got to be in a panicked state when half of the power went out. when the company that supplies the energy to the superdome said basically it was a power surge. the system thought there was an abnormality and shut down. equivalent of at your house a power breaker goes off. a breaker broke. and the half of the energy in the stadium goes off. half the power goes off. here's the thing, for those of you watching at home you had no explanation because the power went out on the side of the announcers, jim nance and phil simms for cbs. you could not hear them because the power was out on their side of the stadium as well. so fans were in the dark inside the stadium and all over the world because there was no explanation. what happened was there was a surge -- there was no fire as originally reported. and the players resumed after 34 minutes on of a power outage. >> 34 long minutes. it felt like i

gone through a whole week with the stadium and city showing they could host an event of this magnitude. it not a gradient issue. this was about a piece of electronic equipment that monitors the electricity coming into the stadium. officials called it an "ab normality." really, it's just like in your house, when you have to go down to the basement and flip the switch again, that's what happened with the officials. they had to flip everything back open. lights slowly came back on. 34 minutes. a big delay for the ravens especially. right before, a kickoff return for the touchdown. right before that, the halftime show. and their offense hadn't been on the field for more than 80 minutes. you could see it affect the game. it became what had been a blowout, became a real nail biter, and the ravens managed to win. here is the winning quarterback talking about the very unusual night. >> unbelievable. just one of the things you have to deal with. you everyone, i'm sure down the road it will make for a better story. >> reporter: here is a statement for the mayor here. the power outage was an unfo

ethan is at home, celebrating his sixth bir birthday and the city is working on a massive birthday celebration. victor blackwell is in midland city, alabama. we're getting a clearer picture of how far dykes went to keep authorities out of that bunker. >> reporter: that's right and we're seeing there was meticulous preparation on both sides, dykes rigged his bunker but the fbi hostage rescue team actually built a replica of the bunker we're told by sources and rehearsed the day and two days before they went in. four feet below this spot is the bunker where jimmie lee dykes held 5-year-old ethan hostage for a week. this is the pipe the fbi said dykes told agents to communicate and we know he made that request. day after the raid bomb technicians found an explosive inside that pipe and second explosive inside the bunker. jimmy davis jr. is a neighbor, he saw the setup in its early stages. >> it was covered up with two sheets of plywood nailed together with hinges and stuff as a door to open to it. >> reporter: authorities say dykes reinforced the bunker to keep them out but they were
